This week in the studio, new “people” arrived via the post. A kangaroo, two bears, a horse, two cows, two dogs and a piglet. All ready to have their portraits done. I began with the smaller bear then added him to the pile under the “King of the Hill”.

The others will have to wait as I’ve begun the first in the series of large paintings. I began with a more detailed drawing of the seated boy doll.

Then drew him onto the linen. I had trouble getting his left shoe right, hence the dark lines and shading from rubbing out and redrawing, then began with the crown and underpainting for the flesh/plastic.

I think I’ll finish the boy before I start to draw the animals underneath. It’s a large canvas and I will need to move it up the wall as I don’t fancy lying on my stomach to paint the bottom figures. I stretch the linen on the wall, then stretch the painting afterwards. I prefer working on the flat surface of the wall.
